António Pedroso Atelier

António Oldemiro das Neves Pedroso was born on January 7, 1968, in the parish of Norte Grande – São Jorge Island.

From an early age, he showed an interest in painting and music, with his first teacher being his own mother – the organist at the Church of Norte Grande – who taught him the basics of music and encouraged him to pursue drawing and, later, painting.

During his studies in Horta, in addition to serving as the organist at the local church, he attended the Fig Tree Pulp Museum for some time and began painting with oil.

He is a travel agent by profession, and painting and music are part of how he spends his free time.

  • In 1985, at the invitation of the Horta City Council, he held his first exhibition during the Sea Week festival.
  • In 1986, he completed his secondary education and began working at the Estalagem das Velas, where he remained until 1997 as the director of this hotel establishment.
  • In 1986, 1987, and 1990, he exhibited in the town of Velas – São Jorge. In São Jorge, both during the Horta – Velas – Horta Regatta and the Cultural Week, he also exhibited his work.
  • In 1988, he attended the “Lorenzo di Medici” Institute in the city of Florence, where he took a restoration course.
  • He taught Visual and Technological Education as a temporary teacher at the Velas Basic School for five years.
  • In 1994, he attended a printmaking course taught by Professor Bartolomeu Cid at the Angra Workshop.
  • In 1995, he attended a ceramics course taught by the ceramist Luís Santos.
  • In 2000, he completed a trainer training course.
  • He taught the subjects of Arts and Traditional Crafts and Tourism for two years at the Vocational School of São Jorge Island.
  • In 2000, at the invitation of the Calheta City Council of São Jorge, he exhibited during the July festival on the theme of wildlife, with particular emphasis on dolphins—a subject he has been developing in recent times.
  • During 2001, he exhibited at the Art Gallery of the Ponta Delgada City Council as well as in the city of Ribeira Grande.
  • In July 2001, he exhibited at the Caixa Económica of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Velas during the Cultural Week.
  • In August 2001, he exhibited in Sousel during a cultural exchange.
  • During 2001 and 2002, he was a painting initiation course instructor for young people, in collaboration with the São Jorge Youth Association and the Regional Youth Directorate of the Azores.
  • Wishing to make a modest contribution to the tourist promotion of São Jorge, on July 3, 2002, he presented a collection of postcards featuring reproductions of his paintings depicting landscapes of the island associated with the underwater world.
  • In 2002, he exhibited in Velas during the Velas Cultural Week.
  • In 2002, he exhibited in Calheta during the July Festival.
  • In 2002, he published the children’s book “The Dolphin Tomás Didn’t Look Back.”
  • In 2003, he exhibited at the Praia Smile Gallery in Praia da Vitória.
  • In 2003, he published the children’s book “The Dolphin Tomás Knows What He’s Doing.”
  • In 2004, he wrote the text for the book “The Church of Santa Barbara.”
  • In 2004, he opened a tourist accommodation called “A Casa do António.”
  • In 2003, 2004, and 2005, he published collections of postcards featuring his paintings under the theme “Azorean Christmas.”
  • In 2005, he opened a pottery and ceramics studio specializing in tiles and clay works.
  • In 2005, he held a painting exhibition titled “Mixed Technique” at the São Jorge Museum.
  • In 2006, he held a painting exhibition at the “Espaço +” gallery.
  • In 2006, he held a tile exhibition at the São Jorge Museum.
  • In 2008, he exhibited ceramics at the Velas Town Hall.
  • In 2009, he exhibited ceramics at the Velas Town Hall.
  • In 2012, he began creating caricatures and exhibited them on the islands of São Miguel, Terceira, and São Jorge.
  • He has been a Regional Deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the Azores since 2012.
